Biography

Dr. Mohd Istajib bin Mokhtar is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Shariah and Law with first-class honours and distinction in 2008, receiving the Royal Education Award. He continued his studies at Universiti Malaya, obtaining a Master’s degree in Islamic Socio-Legal Studies in 2010 and a Ph.D. in 2015.

Dr. Mokhtar‘s interdisciplinary research spans environmental policy, environmental law, environmental ethics, science and law, and the interplay between science and religion. His work critically examines how legal and ethical frameworks can be integrated with scientific advancements to address environmental challenges, emphasizing the importance of cultural and religious contexts in shaping effective environmental policies.

In his upcoming paper, titled “#GreenDeen Aquaponics: Empowering STEM and Technopreneurship in Religious Stream Schools through Sustainable Urban Farming Innovation,” Dr. Mokhtar explores the integration of aquaponics—a sustainable method combining aquaculture and hydroponics—into the curricula of religious stream schools. This initiative aims to enhance STEM education and foster technopreneurship among students by providing hands-on experience with sustainable urban farming practices. By aligning environmental stewardship with religious values, the project seeks to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious and entrepreneurial individuals equipped to contribute to sustainable development.

Beyond his research, Dr. Mokhtar actively engages in projects aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental awareness. He is involved in initiatives such as transforming Universiti Malaya into a carbon-neutral campus and strengthening STEM education for Malaysia’s youth, particularly focusing on improving the performance of students from B40 families. Through these efforts, Dr. Mokhtar contributes significantly to the advancement of environmental education and sustainable practices within academic and broader communities.
